SED Factory Tour Page 1 of 2

TubeDepot.com is proud to offer a look at the inside workings of the SED St. Petersburg manufacturing plant. We will start with initial processes for manufacturing a SED SVEL34 and end with the final product. You can click on the picture for a larger version.

So begins the journey of the making of a SED SVEL34. Here the raw glass tubes are heated on a machine in order to form the envelopes.

The machine takes one long piece of glass and forms 2 separate envelopes.

At this line, the workers are assembling the stems for the EL34. The stem is the internal part of a tube. It contains the filament (cathode), grid and plate (anode).

Here we see a worker inspecting and adjusting a grid.

The plates are welded on. Just like Mullard used to do.

This is a tray of finished stems awaiting cleaning.

This is the hydrogen furnace where the stems will be bathed in a cloud of hot hydrogen gas. The purpose of this step is to remove all impurities from the stem before further assembly.
