The Button powder coating

This is a look at the multi-step process of powder coating. The Button’s finish is far superior to paint and is nearly indestructible. Hopefully, this tour will help to explain why.

The chassis are loaded onto the line which is connected to ground. Powder coating is an “electrical” process where the metal item to be coated is grounded while positive particles (the powder) are dusted onto the surface.

They are washed in a 5-stage process to remove any dirt or grease. A slight alkali wash helps to remove the protective oil applied to the chassis at the stamping factory while the phosphate wash and rinse creates an “attractive” surface for the powder to bond to.

They enter a drying room where they are dried by a huge flame. You can see it in upper right section of the picture. This is the most expensive step in the process as the amount of natural gas consumed to maintain temperature is rather high.

Powder is loaded into the powder hopper. Once activated, the powder in the hopper is aerated through a very fine sieve from below. This helps to keep the powder well mixed and fluid so it flows perfectly to the powder gun.

They enter the powder coating booth where the charged powder will electrostatically adhere to the surface of the metal. The surface receives a 2 micron thick coat.

Here you can see all of the parts heading to the oven.

The chassis enter the oven are then baked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 26 minutes. Inside the oven, the powder actually melts and flows evenly onto the part. It is here where the finish becomes chemically and physically bonded to the metal.

The powder coating is done - The Button is born
